1. Saying why the study of Bible history is important and what he/she can learn from it.

2. Discussing how Christians today are like or different from the people of Israel according to this week's lesson

3. Listing the twelve Books of History.

2. Rebellion Brings Punishment - 1 Corinthians 10:5-6.

3. Learning from Israel's History - 1 Corinthians 10:7-13.

INTRODUCTION

Everybody, no matter how young, has a past and therefore a history. Some people's history can cover a few hours, days, weeks, months, or years, or many of these. Just like you and I have our own history, so the people of Israel of the Old Testament have their own history. Paul summarised this history in our lesson this week. Everything that happened to the people of Israel of the Old Testament has a spiritual message of great significance for all of us today. They are intended to serve examples to us. The reason they are recorded in the Bible is not just to tell us stories, rather to teach us. One of the things we learn from history this week is that disobedience brings punishment.

LESSON COMMENTARY:

1. Israel after Leaving Egypt - 1 Corinthians 10:14.

Paul the apostle did not want the people to be ignorant of how God related to the people of Israel at the beginning. So he quickly gave the history of Israel in the desert in a nutshell.

God brought out the children of Israel from Egypt. When they left Egypt they were guided by a pillar of cloud and they experienced it. Then the sea divided and they all passed through on dry ground. Passing through both the cloud and the sea was a type of baptism. Thus they were all baptised into Moses. This means that they were brought into a deep personal and spiritual relationship with Moses and all the practices of Messiah.

In the wilderness the people of Israel were all fed with the same spiritual food, which is manna. Also they all drank from the same spiritual Rocks that followed them and that Rock was Jesus Christ.

2. Rebellion Brings Punishment - 1Corinthians 10:5.

Verse 5 tells us that God was not happy with many of them in spite of these great blessings and privileges, which they had. In fact, only two from the group that offended God pleased God. The rest of them perished in the wilderness. They became castaways, a people that were overthrown in the wilderness. And we wonder why this happened. Paul did not stop there however. He went on immediately to explain what caused the death and rejection of the greater number of the Israelites that left Egypt.

3. Learning from Israel's History - 1 Corinthians 10:6-13.

The things that happened to the Israelites are examples to the children of God that they should not do the things that people of Israel did that caused their deaths.

First, the people of Israel lusted for things the Lord Had not provided. Children of God should not lust like they did. Second, some of them worshipped idols and this led to their taking part in evil feasting and revelry. They should not worship idols like they did. The idolatry quickly led them into the sin of fornication and adultery as some of them did and in one day twenty three thousand died: Again, Christians should not tempt Christ by seeing how much we can sin before His judgement comes. The children of Israel did this. There was open rebellion which led to many of them being destroyed by snakes. Also, they should not murmur and complain as some of them did against God and their leaders, and were destroyed by the destroyer. Nobody should think that he is too big or t0o strong to fall.

Paul reminds Christians that every temptation (test or trial) that comes their way is common to every human being. God, he says, promises not to allow His children to experience anything beyond what they can bear. And with each temptation He will in His mercy provide a way of overcoming the temptation or power to bear the testing.

APPLICATION:

The lessons we lean this week from history include the fact that studying Bible history is good for everybody and that learning from Israel’s mistake is for our good.

We also learn from history that one day God will bring judgement on the nations and even individuals that do not honour Him.

To serve God in a proper way helps us run away from danger. Believing God will save us from temptations and trials.

We should not think that we have arrived lest we fall when temptation come as the people of Israel fell. That is God's warning to us. However, God promises we will not have more than we can bear. He will help us overcome when temptations come.
